Diabetes is a disease that is affecting more and more people every day. While scientists say that the disease only affects a tiny percentage of the population it seems that almost everyone knows at least one person who suffers from the condition. In recent years medical professionals have noticed there is more to “coming down with” Diabetes than simply being born with the gene that makes it happen. The fact is, medical professionals are beginning to realize that diabetes can even be interrupted if you are careful. Here are some of the leading causes of diabetes and what you can do to restrict them.

Stop drinking if you drink often! Heavy drinking has been linked to diabetes especially in older men. All the different parts of your body are affected by the empty calories and heavy fat that alcohol contains. More than just your liver is affected. Alcohol can also raise your cholesterol levels. High blood pressure and diabetes can result from heavy long term drinking. You can drink a glass of wine a couple times a week without worry though. It can be very harmful to spend a few hours drinking every night.

You should seek treament if you have a problem with how much you drink.

Pregnancy is one of the reasons diabetes happens. Gestational diabetes is very common in pregnant women.

This is a temporary condition that can easily be controlled through diet. Women who have babies that weigh nine plus pounds are also more prone to diabetes than those who have babies below nine pounds. Unfortunately, there are very few things you can do to manage the weight of your baby (and babies are typically being born heavier and heavier every day). Each pregnant woman is tested for gestational diabetes, so she won't have to wonder if maybe she has come down with it. Your physician will help you find a way to control the disease if it happens while you are pregnant.

You probably know that your diet plays a large role in whether or not you will develop diabetes. A poor diet consisting mostly of fatty, salty, and sugary foods is more likely to cause diabetes than a healthy diet. Soda is the strongest aggressor of this disease. Just cutting out the soda pop alone can reduce your risk of getting diabetes by quite a lot. Some doctors say that it can cut your risk by at least a third. Other diet changes should include eating more fruits and vegetables and eating less chips and candy. Not only will your body thank you but you won't miss the junk after awhile.

Believe it or not diabetes is one disease have almost complete control over now. We now know much more about the causes of diabetes than we did 20 years ago. We are now much more able to identify those factors that make us more likely to develop diabetes. If you are dealing with diabetes you need to be aware of all of the available treatment options. We are no longer in the dark about diabetes as a disease. If you learn the symptoms you can avoid the diagnosis.
